First autumn workshop

Few thoughts before first autumn workshop

It's the middle of October and it's time for diary update. Between lectures on High School for Photography, where I teach, regular job and two workshops back to back, it's hard to find time to write diary as well. Since this year autumn colours are a bit late, the photos from the workshops will be slightly different, than the ones I'm use to from the mid October. Hopefully I'll find the time for the regular field reports. For now, I'll leave you with some old autumn favorites:

Comparison between soft focus objectives

Comparison between two soft focus objectives

It's incredible, but last week I developed the last batch of film. It's satisfying to know, that I now can see everything I photograph for the last year. I still need some scanning to do to be able to find candidates for Pd printing that I plan for winter months. Never the less. Between films in last batch I find this photo of deep snow in the forest that I took with two lenses: Hermagis Eidocsope #3 and home made Puyo&Pulligny adjustable landscape lens. This later one is incredibly difficult to use. Firstly it's very, very soft and secondly it's soft focus effect relies on chromatic aberration and therefore visual and chemical focus are not on the same spot and compensation although I have some information, is still wild guess. Both photos were taken with objectives wide open. How much do I succeed in doing this, it's you do decide. I'm quite pleased with both photos, and can't wait to find time to print them.

Soft focus lens - Hermagis Eidoscope

Comparison between sharp and soft focus objective

It's been a while since I last updated my diary. Not that I had noting to do. It's rather opposite. Lectures, working with students and family need their time. And since I started to use 5x4 camera almost exclusively the development of film became the bottleneck. I promise, that I'll be a good boy and update diary on more constant basis.... For now, a comparison between "super sharp" Rodenstock APO Ronar 300mm and "soft and fuzzy" Hermagis Eidoscope #3 275mm.

Slovenia in winter workshop

26th - 31st January 2012 Winter is special time of year, with hopefully very low temperatures and lots of snow.

26th - 31st January 2012 During the winter workshop we hope to capture snow scenes, frozen waterfalls and hoar frost in and around the deep mountain valleys and high passes. This region of Slovenia is a popular skiing venue and snowfall is regular through the winter. The alpine glow on snow-covered summits can be spectacular and we will attempt some long exposures at night with star trails over the mountains. The days will be relatively short, providing us with plenty of time to discuss Photoshop techniques and also to critique the images we have taken during the day. The cost of this workshop is 671€. This price includes transportation from Ljubljana airport to our hotel, all transportation during the tour and transport back to Ljubljana airport. It also includes four nights hotel accommodation (in single rooms) with breakfast.

Photographing House Martins with PhotoTrap first update

First usable photos of house martins in flight

Last days were very busy, so I wasn’t able to do much on this project, but I manage to squeeze in one session. There are still no chicks in this nest, so frequency of visits is very low. But never the less, I got first usable photos.

Photographing House Martin with PhotoTrap - day one

Setting up the system for photographing House Martins with the PhotoTrap

Actually it was not day one, as I spend a week arranging sensors, flashes and diffusers. It took fair amount of time, because I have to be sure that birds accepted new item in the vicinity of their nest before progressing further. From the project with Coal Tit, I learned, that with high speed photography of flying birds, it’s very important to find the distance at which they are flying past the camera. So I decided to set up the camera from below, to find what will be the focusing distance, when I'll be photographing from the side. On right hand side, you can see both transmitter and receiver and on the left there are two bright spots of firing flashes visible.

Phototrap first experience

Well, it's almost three moths sice I received Phototrap! I've been busy exploring it's posibilities plus I was out of the action for almost a month, because of a knee surgery. Together with students from High School for Photography from Ljubljana, where I'm a lecturer. We were photographing Coal Tits at the nest site. They were very active and we got plenty of photos. But during review we found that one of my flashes had too long a duration no matter what setings we used - it's scheduled for repair.

Phototrap - system for tripwire photography

Yesterday I picked up brand new Phototrap remote triggering system from Slovenian Customs.

Yesterday I picked up brand new Phototrap remote triggering system from Slovenian Customs. It is a device used for trip wire photography. I used similar home made device in the past to photograph songbirds in flight, but I had quite some problems with it, so I decide to purchase commercial product. After quite some Internet research, I decide on Phototrap. This device has advantage over similar products, because it doesn't need a reflector for its operation. And in the field positioning the reflector can sometimes be quite difficult. Bill Forbes the maker of the device is a great guy to deal with and so far I'm glad that I decide to buy his product.

Winter workshop - conclusion

What can be said after the workshop has come to conclusion? Despite warm weather we had fantastic conditions for succesful ladscape photography. All days except the last one we had suny weather with nice layer of mist and high clouds.I think that everyone went home with lots of great photos of Slovenian landscape. We'll anounce next year workshop as soon as details have been sent to those who already reserve the place. If you would like to be informed of dates in advance, please send me an E-mail that you would like to join my mailing list.

Winter workshop - day 2

Second day of winter workshop. Lots of driving and very productive.

Temperatures are still far from freezing, but never the less: this day was probably one of the most productive days of our workshops. We found another place good for layers of hills, and we keep on photogaphing late into the night taking photographs of star trails. It was quite bright with lots of moon light and mountains were nicelly light.
