Winter flying birds
15th-19th January 2026
High-speed photography is a rather unusual form of photographic expression and is therefore unique both in the results that are achievable and the challenges it presents to the photographer. I'll be leading this workshop with my friend and experienced wildlife photographer Miro Perušek. The main focus of our high speed workshop will be firstly to help you to learn how to use the basic set-up, so that you'll be able to buy the necessary equipment and run it on your own, and secondly to show you the sophisticated flash set up for incoming birds in flight. In order to achieve that, we'll be learning about flash and why it is necessary to use particular settings to 'freeze' the flying bird. We'll also learn the limitations of cameras to respond to the incoming bird in real time. And of course we'll be studying the light: how to light the bird in order for the result to look natural and what to use as a backdrop. For those not accustomed to using flash this will be a real eye-opener! Due to the technical nature of high-speed photography, please be prepared for lots of explanations! I recommend watching carefully as I set things up, taking notes and asking anything you are not sure about, as the goal is for you to put together the basic system on your own, before we move to the more sophisticated system.
This trip is limited to three participants and the group might be split up to work in different hides.
We'll be using more than one location (depending on the amount of snow), where we hope you'll encounter different bird species. We’ll also use a couple of hides for regular bird photography as well, where we’ll explore some of the richeness of Slovenia’s bird life. Some of the birds we hope to photograph are: Bullfinch, Hawfinch, Middle Spotted Woodpecker, Grey Headed Woodpecker, Crested Tit and Water rail.
If the case of the favourable conditions, we’ll photograph some of the winter landscape locations me and my good friend Guy Edwardes enmassed over the twenty years that we are leading Slovenian Winter Landscape workshops.
