Barn swallow and Slovenian summer nature
11. to 15. June 2026: the exact date might need to be adjusted according to the swallows nesting
Join me to photograph the beautiful nature of Slovenia in early summer. We’ll begin this workshop by photographing barn swallows flying in and out of my stable, where they will be nesting at this time of year. One of the main focusses for this workshop will be setting up and using a high-speed flash system to freeze flying birds in mid-flight. The barn swallows are stage one of this process and for those not accustomed to using flash this will be a real eye-opener! Due to the technical nature of high-speed flash photography, please be prepared for lots of explanations! I recommend watching carefully as I set things up, taking notes and asking anything you are not sure about. The goal is for you to learn enough to be able to put together the basic system on your own. Once you’ve mastered capturing barn swallows with flash, it’s time to move on to stage two and a more more sophisticated high-speed flash system that I will set up to capture a variety of migratory songbirds in flight.
In-between flash photography sessions we will also photograph some of the stunning wildflowers, butterflies and other insects to be found in the Slovenian meadows at this time. We will also visit a forest hide to photograph brown bear. We’ll make the most of beautiful light at the dusk and dawn, so expect long days out in the field! We’ll take rest during periods of harsh light in the middle of the day.
Slovenian landscape in the early summer can be brethtaking and if conditions will allow, we’ll also take advantage of sunrises and sunsets.
